SnackBreak E4// Coke v. Pepsi + Jack Daniels Cupcakes

Jack Daniels cupcakes, Coke v. Pepsi experiment, cookie dough debate and a Midwestern abomination all on this SnackBreak episode.

Coke

OR

Pepsi

Whether you like the burn of a classic Coca-Cola or the sweet taste of an ice cold Pepsi- there’s hardly an in-betweener crowd.

Now, with this being said I thought for this week’s SnackBreak why not put the old Coke or Pepsi taste test into play- with SB twist, naturally.

Jarred has so kindly volunteered himself to be my taste tester (there may have been some snack bribery).

Not only did we solve this Coke/Pepsi dillema BUT we also added what is crucial to true Coke/Pepsi fans.

Is fountain coke/pepsi different than bottled or canned in a blind taste test. The results appeared to be obvious to us before we started but after tasting and guessing…

Jarred failed the taste test!

There is common ground to be found in Coke v. Pepsi war—-> Coke pairs well with Jack Daniels….and Jack Daniels cupcakes too it turns out!

So maybe this means Coke is the winner *sigh*

But YES, you read that correctly. The Jack Daniels cakes have been made by a dear friend of mine who is a phenomenal chef and of course they didn’t last long here at home! (I did save Jarred one, even though he failed the test, haha).

These were INCREDIBLE. I sent her a recipe from Pinterest by Creative Culinary (recipe linked!), and she added cinnamon to the batter and to the glaze that she made to top it off! Such beautiful cupcakes made with the good stuff.

In other SB topics: Edible cookie dough and some kind of Midwestern abomination….Ranch flavored Pop-tarts, but don’t worry it’s not a real thing-we hope.

SnackBreak E3// How Midwestern Do You Sound Prank

I thought how funny would this be to have some friends do this quiz then prank them with the results to listen to their Midwestern reactions.

SnackBreak 3.0

Recently I heard a podcast episode that rocked my socks off – almost literally in this humid Missouri weather.

The KCUR podcast attached me with it’s clever title “Midwesternish”. After having gone down south for college I really started to notice that my Midwestern Twang was much clearer than I ever thought, even with the tiny bit of country sound that sometimes I carry in my speech.

The podcast was super entertaining especially with the city love that Kansas City has embraced in these last several years. The overlooked, once forgotten region that is the heart of America is so much cooler than we get credit for. (side note: the twitter account referenced in the audio is @midwestern_ope)

But anyways (the podcast says this is a Missouri word btw) this got me thinking about a quiz I took in a communication course in Community College from the New York Times that breaks down where your dialect is most similar, regionally.

As a lover of language and communicating I just find this so interesting-but as a lover of comedy I thought how funny would this be to have some friends do this quiz then prank them with the results to listen to their Midwestern reactions.

Plus, I can’t lie I have some pretty funny friends + their answers are hil-ar-ious.

Seeing as this is a SnackBreak segment of course I’ll add some good snack news for you to browse while listening to the audio that is attached to this post.

SO with that being said, if you’re listening and can’t wait to hear Jarred and Chris’ responses – go ahead and use this cheat sheet to skip to their answers…it’s well worth it I assure you, especially because they had NO idea I was going to call.

Jarred: 05:10

Chris: 16:03

SnackBreak news wrap up: 24:50

Update on the Jack Daniels cupcakes: They are being baked as you read this and a review/cupcake fangirl session is just around the corner I assure you

ALSO, the MOST important piece of this post is that my FAVORITE Taco Bell item is currently back for a while. The nacho fries have resurfaced and I have seen them (and eaten them 3x this week now). So, here’s a pro tip if you’re also feeling like you’re missing the Rattlesnake Nacho Fries Burrito like I am, order and combine these almost always available Taco Bell items to create a pretty good knock-off:

Quesarito + Diablo sauce + Nacho Fries

This is the easiest, closest thing I have accidently created and I’m telling you it will not disappoint.

SnackBreak E2// Cupcakes, Jack Daniels and Country Music; audio attached

Today’s SnackBreak is going to be a good one. Why so you ask? Well because there are three pieces of today’s talk that are being combined to be a great conversation.

Everyone needs a SnackBreak sometimes…especially one with me, Meg.

Today’s SnackBreak is going to be a good one. Why so you ask? Well because there are three pieces of today’s talk that are being combined to be a great conversation.

  1. Cupcakes
  2. Justin Moore
  3. Jack Daniels

Okay so, if we add these all together what do we get? A great playlist to lead us into Kansas City’s Hot Country Nights this Thursday where Justin Moore is preforming all while making some super, extraordinary cupcakes. Yes, made with Jack Daniels (genius).

Check out the 5 minute audio file that will accompany this SnackBreak (I finally got to it! ) And I added the last SnackBreak’s White Claw review to it as well-just for you!

So. Let’s get into it.

Let me climb up on my SnackBreak soap box for just a moment…

If you haven’t listened to the audio yet and you are a cookie cake fan, we’re probably still friends. If not and you heard me say cookie cake is inferior to actual cake, I must say I genuinely believe this. To the cookie cake fans out there: If you can make a cookie cake that is as versatile as cupcakes *Jack Daniels* then I may be able to understand this fake cake concept. Otherwise…regular cake is still superior to me.

Okay, stepping down. Let’s get back into this SB and why I paired the three topics of this segment together.

Like I mentioned earlier Justin Moore is coming to preform this week. His latest single is “Jesus and Jack Daniels”. So, while I was at work the other day, at 95.3 KDKD I heard this song and of course my snack oriented brain started wondering if anyone had ever tried to make cupcakes with Jack Daniels.

I’ve made desserts in the past with Kahlua and other liquors so I figured someone, somewhere had tried this. And thank goodness I was right!

I found some recipes to these cupcakes on Pinterest so if you’re feeling adventurous and listening to Justin Moore….search Jack Daniels cupcakes and bask in the numerous results you can choose from.

Let me know how your cupcakes turn out on social media or through the contact page linked.

SnackBreak E1// Happy Memorial Day weekend; spiked edition.

Today’s SnackBreak, however, is a little different (why stick to a routine, right). The topic is a popular drink that I resisted for WAY too long. The hard seltzer, White Claw.

As a Radio DJ this past year at 91.1 FM WMSV, I created a segment called ‘SnackBreak with Meg’.

Yes, this did bring me large amounts of happiness getting to talk about snacks and food on a public broadcast but it also sparked a lot of good foodie conversations that I didn’t expect.

I had listeners sending me food news and asking me about my favorite snacks (I have way to many to count…no, not a joke) so I thought I would put together a little snack guide for the average non-obsessed snack lover. We’ll call these the post-college SnackBreak.

Today’s SnackBreak, however, is a little different (why stick to a routine, right). The topic is a popular drink that I resisted for WAY too long. The hard seltzer, White Claw.

Okay, okay hear me out before you click away! I’m a beer fan, not a fruity drink or mixed drink kind of gal – just beer. So when I kept seeing this drink gaining so much hype I thought it looked like drinking a spiked, flavored soda water. To me, drinking an alcoholic LaCroix this summer at the pool just didn’t sound as good as a cold beer. However…

i was w r o n g

Here are the flavors that I had from the variety pack that I drink this past memorial weekend ranked best —> worst.

  1. Lime: This was hands down the best, I’m fairly certain I could have drank a whole case of this stuff because it was wonderful….okay maybe very certain.
  2. Black Cherry: Very good flavor, super light taste and it was my flavor pick of the weekend after all of the Lime White Claws were gone (which was pretty quick I might add.)
  3. Raspberry: Not a huge fan and honestly when this was the only White Claw left I resorted for a beer instead. Other people with me seemed to really like the raspberry flavor though so – to each their own.
  4. Ruby Grapefruit: I just realized that I didn’t try this one! The rest of my girl gang liked this flavor and one even like this one more than the raspberry.

So, if you haven’t tried the trendy White Claw all I have to say, is get on it.

Side note: as the featured image on this post shows, I had my first White Claw…while eating breakfast…but hey it was 11 a.m. and there may have been donuts on the 3 hour car ride that came before (:

Red, white and blue sprinkle donut with cherry icing from LaMar’s Donuts in Lee’s Summit, MO.

Snack-Break Announcement

A Snack-Break while I swap my box of ho-hos for Army boots.

SnackBreak with Meg will be taking a small break while I’m at basic training…I’m sure once I’m back I’ll be ready for some really good, very missed snacks.

In the meantime, I’m still accepting snack news and favorites through the contact page on this site-as well as through the Megan Terry, SnackBreak Facebook page (if you didn’t know, now you do).

Enjoy all the best snacks while I’m eating whatever the Army gives me.

Snack on!
